Edwin Gothic

Typeface design originating from a gravestone rubbing

Brief
Create an outcome stemming from the word ‘rebirth’.

Concept
To create a typographic rebirth inspired by a gravestone rubbing of the letter ‘n’ which was entirely different to the other type on the gravestone.

Solution
'Edwin Gothic' is a fully working typeface named after the gravestone from which it originated. Stemming from a rubbing of the letter 'n', which was entirely different to the other letterforms, this typeface celebrates the beauty of imperfection, with connecting letters and select ligatures inspired by the calligraphic stroke.
Used to typeset Tennyson's poem 'The Lady of Shalott' the themes of mortality, isolation and art to the detriment have been explored through typographic expression. A range of treatments increasingly alter the 2.5m scroll of text, destroying it to a certain extent and mimicking the narrative.

TYPE SPECIMEN SCROLL

Brief
To create a type specimen scroll displaying ‘Edwin Gothic’.

Concept
Beginning with a replica of Edwin’s gravestone, I used gravestone text to punctuate the scroll. The type gradually degrades, like weathered gravestones.
